So there were a few updates for Nokia’s Symbian 3 devices being talked about over the last few days. Sadly, I’m only just getting to them now but better late than never.
Nokia released the Anna update for the N8, C7, E7 and C6-01 last week and it is still rolling out it seems (a co-worker with a Nokia N8 says he hasn’t got the update yet). It’s also unclear if the T-Mobile astound will get the update or not. You can read about the changes in Anna on Nokia Conversations here, and how to update here.
Meanwhile, there are more updates in the way including a camera update for the N8 which is now in beta. You can get that for you phone today from here and read more about it over at Nokia Conversations.
The other update being talked about is Symbian Belle and a Belle related announcement is expected on Wednesday. More than likely we will see a few Symbian Belle devices announced, but it’s also possible we could find out when we will get the Belle update officially for the Symbian devices already released.
For those unwilling to wait for an official update, and willing to risk bricking your device, you can get Belle now. Instructions on updating your device are here (or here in video) and from what I’ve seen on twitter, and articles on other blogs, in general people who have done so have been pleased with the improvements they have seen since updating to Belle.
So yeah, while it’s clearly not Nokia’s priority in the future, Symbian is clearly not as dead as some people thought it was. And don’t forget to check out the Symbian UI Guidelines which have been updated for Symbian Belle.
